Check suspicious links, files, and QR codes before you trust them

This page collects trusted websites and tools to help you detect malicious content. Use these checks before clicking unknown links, opening files, or scanning random QR codes.

Important: Never upload highly private files (passport scans, legal docs, medical records) to public scanners. Use local antivirus for sensitive files.

2) Check Suspicious Files

VirusTotal File Scanner

Uploads files for multi-engine malware scanning.

  • Best for: unknown attachments and downloads
  • Tip: compare filename and hash before opening
Scan File

MetaDefender Cloud

Cloud malware scanner with static analysis options.

  • Best for: second-opinion file checks
  • Shows: threat detections and file metadata
Open MetaDefender

Jotti Malware Scan

Simple alternative for quick multi-engine file scan.

  • Best for: quick verification
  • Use when you need a fast second check
Open Jotti

3) Check QR Codes and Short Links

Extract QR Content First

Use your camera preview and do not open immediately. Copy the URL text first if possible.

  • Best for: avoiding instant phishing redirects
  • Rule: preview first, open later

Unshorten.It

Expands shortened links so you can inspect the final destination.

  • Best for: bit.ly and other short links in QR codes
  • Then scan the expanded URL with VirusTotal
Open Unshorten.It

Trend Micro Check

Web reputation checker for suspicious links shared on social media or chat apps.

  • Best for: quick mobile-friendly checks
  • Use as extra validation after URL expansion
Open Trend Micro Check

4) Other Must-Have Protection Tools

Browser Protection

Use browser security features and anti-phishing warnings.

  • Microsoft Defender SmartScreen (Edge)
  • Enhanced Protection (Chrome Safe Browsing)
  • DNS filtering like Cloudflare 1.1.1.2 / 1.1.1.3

Email and Domain Investigation

Investigate suspicious senders and domains before replying.

  • MXToolbox for domain and mail checks
  • WHOIS lookup for domain age and owner patterns
Open MXToolbox

Breach Monitoring

Check if your email was exposed in known data breaches.

  • Use Have I Been Pwned to check exposure
  • If leaked: change password and enable 2FA
Open Have I Been Pwned

Fast Safety Workflow (Use This Every Time)

Step 1: Do not click immediately. Pause and inspect sender/context.
Step 2: Scan URL in VirusTotal + Safe Browsing report.
Step 3: For files, run scan in two services and local antivirus.
Step 4: If any tool flags it, delete or report it. Do not open.
